A Cool and Smooth Transmission in Memphis

When it comes to preventive maintenance on our vehicles, most of us Memphis drivers remember to get our oil changed. But services that occur at longer intervals — like transmission service — sometimes get overlooked. Yet transmission service is part of car care. A poorly maintained transmission will fail and lead to repairs. The transmission transfers power from the engine to the drive wheels. When it's clean and well-lubricated, it gives maximum fuel efficiency. But when it gets dirty or worn down, your transmission will suffer. Your transmission relies on transmission fluid to keep everything running well. This is why the transmission fluid must be changed periodically. Your owner's manual will give you a recommended time schedule for this service. Or, you can ask your friendly and knowledgeable Allen's Automotive Center service advisor. Generally, the interval is around 35,000 miles (55,000 km) or every two years. But the interval for your vehic ... read more

Fuel Saving Tip: Alignment for Your Memphis Vehicle

Imagine you've left Memphis and you're up in the arctic on a dog sled.Your dog team is pulling straight and true. You can cover a lot of ground quickly. Now imagine what would happen if one or two of the dogs wanted to go their own way and were pulling off to the side. That would slow you down. You would have to work harder to keep the sled going where you want it. The dogs are all working as hard as before, but you're covering less ground for the same effort. You're wasting kibble. The same is true of your vehicle when the wheels are out of alignment. That wheel that's pulling to the side is dragging down the rest of the vehicle; so you push a little harder on the gas pedal to keep up your speed. You're wasting gas.So have your wheel alignment checked at least once a year. It is important to get it checked right away if you feel the vehicle pulling to one side.Sometimes we Memphis residents bump a curb or hit a pothole and knock our wheels out of alignment. An accident can take the ... read more

The Maintenance Free Myth

Sometimes we hear people in Memphis say, "What's up with all this maintenance stuff? Modern cars just don't break down." While it is true that today's vehicles are extremely reliable, they are also becoming increasingly complicated and use more exotic materials than ever before. All that complexity demands higher tolerances for everything. For example, most Memphis drivers don't realize how high tech automotive fluids have become,  fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant and brake fluid.Did you know that a modern engine would not run for more than a few months using motor oil formulas from 30 years ago? Today's automotive fluids contain a much higher percentage of additives to protect your vehicle's components from premature wear and corrosion. Time and distances march on for all of our cars. Please don't think we're using scare tactics to get you to take care of your maintenance - but here are some personal stories we've heard to em ... read more

Below 45 Degrees in Memphis: Consider Winter Tires

Remember snow tires? They were basically just regular tires with big, knobby lugs to get them through deep snow. They were loud and rode hard, and Memphis drivers couldn't wait to get them off the car. Then along came television advertisements for “all-season” radials. Tennessee drivers ran out and bought some and we thought we were done with snow tires forever.Tires have come a long way since then. Modern winter tires sold in the Memphis area are much better designed for the wide range of conditions that come with Tennessee winter weather. They are made with a rubber compound that helps them stay flexible in cold weather. Regular tires become hard and stiff at Memphis temperatures below 45°F (7° C) which reduces their traction. That's a concern in winter, especially with snowy or wet conditions. But it also means that Memphis drivers are better off with winter tires in cold weather even when it's dry.The tread design on winter tires has been improved to move snow ... read more

How to Know When to Change Your Oil at Allen's Automotive Center

Today in the Allen's Automotive Center auto care blog, we're going to talk to Memphis drivers about oil change intervals. It seems that as engine technology advances, oil change intervals become longer for Allen's Automotive Center customers. For example, recently four of the world's largest vehicle manufacturer's shortened the published intervals for several of their engine models. They originally published intervals that extended out to a much as 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers). In real world Memphis driving, the oil started to sludge up before the recommended change interval. Oil sludge is a thick jelly-like substance: quite literally petroleum jelly – like Vaseline. This goop was clogging vehicle small engine passages so the oil wouldn't flow to some parts of the engine. This resulted in engine damage. We see it too often at Allen's Automotive Center in Memphis. The vehicle manufacturers began to offer an extended warranty to cover sludge damage. But there was ... read more

TPMS: Tire Pressure Monitoring for Your Memphis Vehicle

Memphis drivers may know that all 2008 model year and newer cars, mini-vans and light trucks in Tennessee come with a tire pressure monitoring system. Many slightly older vehicles around the Memphis area have these systems as well. A tire pressure monitoring system – called TPMS – consists of sensors on each wheel that measure tire pressure. If tire pressure drops 25 percent below the vehicle manufacture’s recommended pressure, the sensor sends a signal to a monitoring unit that causes a warning to light up on the dashboard. When drivers see the warning light, they know it's time to put some air in the tires. There are many benefits to people in Memphis who drive with properly inflated tires. First is cost savings. Running at the correct air pressure improves fuel economy. Driving on underinflated tires is like driving through sand – it drags down your fuel economy. Drivers in Memphis will also see longer, more even tread wear so your t ... read more

Servicing High Mileage Vehicles at Allen's Automotive Center

The price of gas and the uncertain economy are both causing Tennessee residents to review their finances. More and more Memphis drivers are opting to keep their vehicles longer and put off purchasing a newer car. It is estimated that two-thirds of the vehicles on the roads of North America today have over 75,000 miles/120,000 km on them. And the average age of vehicles is now over eleven years. That translates to some car care issues that many Memphis men and women haven't dealt with in the past. Older vehicles simply have different maintenance requirements than newer ones. Learning those requirements presents a challenge for people in Memphis because many owner's manuals only publish maintenance schedules up to 60,000 or 90,000 miles (96,000 or 145,000 km). Vehicle owners have to keep good records and be more involved in planning preventive maintenance if they want to keep their vehicles on the road. First of all, any service in your owner's manual that comes with a ... read more

Wipe Out! New Wiper Blades for Memphis Drivers

When people in Memphis talk about vehicle safety, they think of tires and brakes. But do we think about our windshields? Isn't the ability to see a prime safety factor when it comes to driving around Tennessee? Yet we often don't even notice our windshields until we can't see through them or our wiper blades fail. It's estimated that around 46 million people are driving with wipers that won't keep their windshields clear during a storm — that's 46 million people with impaired vision during a storm. For safety's sake, Memphis drivers need to change the way they think about wiper blades. Most of us, 78% in fact, only change our wiper blades after they fail. In other words, we don't get new ones until the old ones become a safety hazard. Instead, we need to make wiper blades part of our preventive maintenance routine.Wiper blades should be changed twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. In Tennessee areas that experience harsh winter weather, special blades are available that p ... read more
