Fuel Filter Service in Memphis, Tennessee

There are a surprising number of small, inexpensive parts that can lead to expensive engine damage when they fail. It doesn't seem right.Fortunately a lot of those things can be taken care of in routine maintenance. They may not be easy to remember because it is a long list, but your service center at Allen's Automotive Center can help you know what's scheduled to be taken care of.Some of us in Memphis, Tennessee, really don't look forward to going in for an oil change and then getting a list of the other things the manufacturer recommends. But automotive maintenance is all about prevention and addressing small problems before they get big. Let's take the fuel filter for example. You may not know this but the median age for private vehicles on our Memphis, Tennessee, roads is over nine years. When vehicles get older, five years or so, they've accumulated a lot of dirt and rust in their gas tanks. If that dirt gets into the engine it can cause t ... read more

Vive la Differential at Allen's Automotive Center in Memphis

There are a lot of drivers in Memphis who are due for a differential service, but had never heard of a differential before. With front-wheel drive being so common in Tennessee these days, the differential is just taken care of during a transmission service, so most Memphis folks don't even have to think about it. And rear-wheel drive differentials don't need to be serviced for years, so it's understandable that it's not something on the top of your mind. It's not uncommon for people in Memphis to not know they have a differential, let alone know that it needs service. To better understand what a differential does, think about a track at any Tennessee high school. There are lanes marked off on the track. For the longer distance races, the starting lines are staggered. The starting lines for the outside lanes are ahead of the starting lines for the inside lanes. That's to compensate for the longer length of the outside lanes. Staggering the starting lines means that each ... read more

Allen's Automotive Center Tire Safety: Washington vs. Lincoln

Welcome to the Allen's Automotive Center automotive blog. Today, let's talk about the effect of tire wear. Let's focus on stopping in wet Memphis conditions. In order for a tire to have good contact with the road, it has to move the water out of the way. If it can't move the water, the tire will actually ride on top of a thin film of water. That's called hydroplaning. If it's really bad, Memphis drivers can actually spin out of control - endangering themselves and the other drivers around them. At best, you won't stop as fast. So how does a tire move water? It has channels for water to flow through. Look at your vehicle tire and you'll see channels: channels that run around the tire and channels that flow across the tire. They're designed to direct water away from the tire so it can contact the road better. And the deeper the channel, the more water it can move. A brand new Allen's Automotive Center tire has very deep channels and can easily move a ... read more

Straight and True in Memphis: Wheel Alignment

Most Memphis folks worry about running out of gas or having a breakdown on the side of the road. That is why we practice preventive maintenance on our vehicles — that and to keep our repair bills down. But one important part of preventive maintenance that may get overlooked by drivers in Memphis is a periodic alignment inspection. Poor alignment causes tires to wear rapidly, unevenly or both. This means they will have to be replaced early, and new tires are more expensive than an alignment check in Memphis. Bad alignment can also cause damage to suspension and steering systems, which can be expensive to repair in Memphis. Tire wear on misaligned wheels can also lead to blowouts, which are dangerous, can lead to serious accidents and can seriously damage your vehicle. Also, poor alignment itself can be the cause of an accident since the vehicle may not steer properly. One or more wheels on your vehicle can be knocked out of alig ... read more
