Fuel Filter Replacement

Hello Memphis resident! You would never like to drink a glass of mud, right? Well, your vehicle feels the same way. It needs a steady supply of clean fuel in order to run well and deliver good fuel economy. The fuel filter's job is to clean dirt and rust out of the fuel before it gets to your engine. A clogged fuel filter can actually choke off the engine so that it won't start or run. Some fuel filters have a bypass valve that allows fuel to go around the clogged filter so your vehicle will still run. But, then the contaminated fuel can clog your fuel injectors and allow particles into your engine.A vehicle with a partially clogged fuel filter might run well around Memphis, but sputter and strain on the because it's starving for gas. There are two things that affect how often you need to replace the filter. They are: where you drive in Tennessee and the gas you buy. If you drive a lot on dirt or gravel roads in rural Tenness ... read more

Arrive Alive in Memphis

We've all seen drivers do crazy things while driving to or from Memphis. A guy shaving in the rear-view mirror, a woman applying makeup, people talking on their phones, texting or drinking from an enormous coffee mug. It's a wonder we even dare drive on Tennessee roads. The truth is that all of us are distracted when we drive. Unfortunately, traffic, road construction and other external factors are beyond our control. The distractions inside our car, however, are things we can often control. Here's some things that'll give you more control in your car, and help keep your attention on the roads around Memphis. Memphis drivers who are 16 to 20 years old tend to be more distracted by the radio, CD or MP3 player. Memphis drivers who are 20 to 29 are more distracted by passengers in the car, including small children. Those over age 65 tend to be more distracted by objects or events that are outside of the vehicle. Other factors like fatigue, stress and lack of sleep make it harder to pay a ... read more

Fuel Saving Tip: Dirty Oil in Your Memphis Vehicle

If you're a quart low in your vehicle, there isn't enough motor oil to lubricate your engine properly. The extra friction causes drag that reduces fuel economy while you're driving around the Memphis area. The same goes for dirty oil; it doesn't reduce friction properly. The result is you get to watch those numbers at your local Memphis gas pump rolling higher and higher. The transmission also needs the proper amount of clean fluid to do its work. When it's in need of service, the transmission drags your fuel economy down.So keep it clean at Allen's Automotive Center  and give yourself a fighting chance. Fuel Injector Cleaning at Allen's Automotive Center

In very simple terms, a fuel injector is a valve that squirts fuel into your vehicle engine. Your engine control computer tells the fuel injector how much fuel to deliver as well as the precise time it should be delivered. Of course this happens thousands of times a minute in every single fuel-injected vehicle driving down Memphis roads. Most fuel injectors for gas engines are known in the Memphis automotive community as port fuel injectors because they deliver the fuel to a port just outside the cylinder. The fuel pump provides pressure needed to squirt the right amount of fuel into the engine. A few have recently introduced gas direct injection systems on some engines. They are now available at some Tennessee dealerships. These systems inject the gas directly into the cylinders under very high pressure – many times the pressure of port injection systems. Although more complicated, direct ... read more

Keep It Flowing with a Fuel Filter Replacement at Allen's Automotive Center

The function of the fuel filter is pretty self-explanatory. It filters your fuel. The fuel filter is in the fuel line somewhere in between the fuel tank and the engine. Both gas and diesel vehicles around Memphis use fuel filters. For more information about your fuel filter, visit Allen's Automotive Center at 1195 WINFIELD AVE. in Memphis, Tennessee 38116.Please call 901-332-3279 to make an appointment. Generally speaking there's not a lot of dirt in our Memphis area auto fuel supply, but there is enough that you want to screen it out. The problem actually gets worse the older your vehicle becomes. That's because dirt, rust and other contaminants will settle out of the fuel and onto the bottom of the fuel tank. After your vehicle is five years or older, it can actually have a fair amount of sediment built up.That just means that the fuel filter has to work harder as your vehicle ages. It'll get clogged sooner and need to be replac ... read more

Keep Your Cool in Memphis

Memphis drivers rely on their vehicle's coolant system to keep their engine cool. Coolant (also called antifreeze) mixed with water flows through your vehicle engine and absorbs heat. The mixture then flows out to the radiator where it's cooled by air flowing over the radiator. From there the coolant/water mix circulates back through the engine to absorb more heat. There's a reason we mix coolant and water. Water alone actually does a good job transferring heat from the engine. The problem is that water boils at a temperature that's easily reached inside your vehicle's engine, so it can turn to steam which does not conduct heat as well and is harder to contain. Also, if it's freezing outside in Memphis, the water in your engine could freeze while your vehicle is sitting out in the Tennessee cold. So, if you remember your high school chemistry, you'll know that a mixture has both a higher boiling point and a lower freezing point than ... read more

Battery Basics for Memphis

Battery Basics for Memphis

It's important for Memphis drivers to know battery basics. First, let's talk about which is harder on a battery – hot or cold Tennessee weather. Most Memphis area drivers think it's cold weather because that's when we call on our batteries to have enough power to start a cold vehicle engine. However, heat does more damage to a battery than cold. Truth is, our batteries start to die a little from day one. Keeping a full charge slows the process, which is hard with short Memphis trips because the alternator doesn't have time to fully recharge the battery from starting the engine. Memphis drivers can top off the charge with a computer controlled battery charger – say, once a month in the summer and every three months during the winter. As far as how long a battery will last, statistics show that 70% have given up the ghost within four years. By that time, they aren't capable of taking a full charge like they used to, a ... read more
