Fuel Injection Keeps Getting Better for Memphis Motorists

Memphis residents know that engines burn fuel to operate. Fuel is pumped from your fuel tank to your engine where it is squirted—or injected—into your engine's cylinders. This is the function of the fuel injectors. There are two ways to inject fuel into an engine. Fuel needs air to burn, so in the first method, fuel is injected into a port and allowed to mix with airand before it is drawn into the cylinders. In the second method, fuel is injected directly into the cylinders and mixes with air after it enters the engine.Direct injection engines burn fuel more efficiently than conventional engines. Some models can deliver the power of a V8 with the economy of a V6.For example, in one family of engines, the conventional version (a V6) delivers about 250 horsepower. The direct injection version delivers over 300 horsepower and gets about the same . The turbocharged version delivers 350 horsepower. Why the big difference in power? Direct in ... read more

Why Wheel Balancing and Tire Rotation Save You Money on Tires

Memphis drivers want their tires to last as long as possible. Two ways to extend tire life are wheel balancing and tire rotation. When wheels are out of balance, they wobble and vibrate. That makes the tires wear in a cupping pattern. If a front wheel is out of balance you'll feel it in the steering wheel. If it's a rear wheel you'll feel it through your seat. To fix this, your technician at Allen's Automotive Center puts weights on your wheels to balance them out. That brings us to tire rotation. The front tires on a vehicle wear out faster than the rear tires. As they push through turns, the shoulders of the front tires wear down. So rotating front and rear tires allows them to all wear at about the same rate over the life of the tire.Proper tire inflation will also help Memphis folks' tires last longer. Underinflated tires wear more on the shoulder and may even overheat. This could cause tire damage or a blow out. Overinflated tires wear too fast in the middle.Four-wh ... read more

Memphis Exhaust and Emissions Service

Many Memphis residents don't realize that there is more to exhaust system maintenance than just tailpipes and mufflers, if you can see smoke or if it's too loud. Exhaust service at a full-service automotive center like Allen's Automotive Center is really a lot more comprehensive these days. For example, in the U.S., the federal government required catalytic converters for all cars in 1976 and on-board emission control computers in 1990. Tennessee and federal emissions requirements have forced manufacturers to come up with much more sophisticated ways to comply with environmental laws. This also goes for cars sold in Canada. So, exhaust service has really become exhaust and emissions service. High-tech computer-controlled emissions devices are now necessary. And because it's so sophisticated, we recommend having your emission system checked out by a qualified technician, like the ones we have at Allen's Automotive Center, regularly to make sure everything's working right – which is ... read more

Maintaining Your Older Car in Memphis, Tennessee

The government mandates a lot of equipment on cars in Memphis, Tennessee: emission devices and control computers, safety equipment like airbags and crash worthiness requirements. All of this is great for the Memphis motoring public, but it does add quite a bit to the price of a new vehicle.Because new vehicles are more expensive, people in the Memphis area are driving their old vehicles longer. The average vehicle is now over nine years old. Two thirds of vehicles on the road in Tennessee have more than 75,000 miles (120,000 km) on them. All About Your TPMS in Memphis

Memphis drivers know that underinflated tires wear out more quickly. Underinflation is also a major cause of tire failure for Tennessee auto owners. More flats, blow outs, skids and longer stopping distances are all results of underinflated tires. It's hard for many Memphis drivers to tell when a radial tire is underinflated. If your owner’s manual recommends 35 pounds of pressure, your tire is considered significantly under-inflated at 26 pounds. The tire may not look low until it gets below 20 pounds.Uncle Sam to the rescue! A recent U.S. federal law required vehicle manufacturer’s to include a Tire Pressure Monitoring System - or TPMS system - in all vehicles. Many Canadian vehicles have them as well.  The system is a dashboard mounted warning light that goes off if one or more of the tires falls 25% below its pressure recommendations.Obviously, all of this doesn't come free for Memphis car owners. Hi Memphis residents. Let's talk fuel injectors. A fuel injector is a valve that delivers fuel to a vehicle's engine. It has to deliver the precise amount of fuel to precisely the right place, precisely when the engine needs it. The fuel also has to be mixed with air before it can burn in the engine.Fuel injectors are engineered to spray fuel in a specific pattern into the engine. (The pattern varies by engine type and design.) In order to achieve these spray patterns, the fuel must be pressurized.Vehicles have one fuel injector for each cylinder in the engine. Your vehicle's control computer constantly monitors the engine and various sensors in the vehicle.  It also adjusts the fuel injectors accordingly so that they can deliver the proper amount of fuel to the engine. As you can see, fuel injectors are a sophisticated and vital part of your vehicle's engine.
